something You like

when the clouds disperse upon the next morning sky,

my Friend will be going on a trip.

i’m not necessarily sure the places They’ll go,

but They told me to gather a list of things i may desire.

each stop will be a new world for Them,

but some moments will be a moment just for me.

They told me many things among those ideas,

so i wondered if should i make a list of things i desire?

but i told them something i desired the most,

i believed

please get me something You like,

i want to learn to enjoy the world as You do.

They went on the morning of the last morning sky,

and there was fog wherever i viewed.

i wondered if They were seeing a morning,

somewhere off in some direction.

*beep* *beep*, my phone rang later:

They were somewhere in japan,

and They asked what i wanted.

please get me something You like,

i want to learn to enjoy the world as You do.

but They got me a sakura-resin bracelet-

because You have so many bracelets around!

*beep* *beep*, my phone rang during breakfast:

They were at the great barrier reef in australia,

and They asked what i wanted.

please get me something You like,

i want to learn to enjoy the world as You do.

but They got me keychain of a manta ray-

because You sounded so excited when You first saw them!

*beep* *beep*, my phone rang when my curtains glistered:

They were all the way up north in svalbard,

seeing the northern lights.

and They asked me

what i wanted.

please get me something You like,

i want to learn to enjoy the world as You do.

but They got me a “I love polar bears” t-shirt-

because You looked so happy when You talked about them!

and i wondered if I did.

*beep* *beep*, my phone rang while my thoughts were in a daze

flowing through the river and dispersing into many colours,

and They were for some odd reason, all the way down south

where time had forgotten the vast valleys and uphill waterfalls,

the fresh reflection of Antarctica; a carte blanche,

and what is it that You want from Antarctica?

a snowcat, an ice cube, a neutrino?

thank You, but this time, please get Me something You like,

I want to learn to enjoy the world.

and We visited Antarctica together the following evenings

when the stars lie between the spaces when they may be seen,

We got what We wanted-

Comment: Narrative spaces are an interesting concept to imagine. It helps determine distinctions, yet considers the relationships between them to provide for comprehension. In the scope of what we’d consider outside of fiction and media, what are our spaces? Sometimes, it’s strange to imagine a place where something exists and something doesn’t. Is it strange to wonder what makes you different from me? If you were to give me something from yourself, what would become of it? How do I consider it? Perhaps it’s all in the narrative goals that define what we want. And it may be a struggle to fixate on something that may not be as I want it to be. Or limit what is beyond what I may see. I wonder where the narrative spaces lie, how they interact with each other. Our relationships really are quite unique, wherever we exist in these spaces. No matter how many places we may be. How can I enjoy it, how can I not?

  1. loved this one, damn. I really like this style where you tell a story and it’s easy to follow on the first read but also holds a lot of hidden details to uncover afterwards. The transition between being about “you” to being about “us” was beautifully done. It’s really interesting how you made the line where the narrator starts to think of themselves, the one where the poem shifts to being about both people.
